Uta no Prince-sama - Maji Love 1000% - Idol Song Ittoki Otoya CD review

Title: Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love 1000% Idol Song Ittoki Otoya
Artists: Ittoki Otoya (Terashima Takuma)
Release date: 27 July, 2011
Version: n/a

Packaging: Things are kept simple with the usual jewel case with a rather plain looking back cover. As each character gets a single dedicated to them this release is tailored for the character Ittoki Otoya with his character color, red, being liberally used wherever it can be. The only artwork included is the cover image which does well in keeping with the theme of the rest while showing Otoya's personality of someone who is generally energetic and happy.

Tracks:

1. BRAND NEW MELODY - This is the solo song the character sings in the episode he is featured in for the first season of the Utapri anime series. And while it was made to fit in the episode it stands on its own just fine. I really enjoy the fact that it uses the guitar so much for it as that is the instrument Otoya is connected with for the series. I am a sucker for songs that start out simply and build so I really love how it just starts off with Otoya singing with the guitar as the only instrument and other instruments are added as the song progresses. Love the section around the two and a half minute mark where it goes off for something a bit different before bringing to back to the main melody. It is a fun rock song which fits the character well and is a good match for his voice tone.

2. OVER THE RAINBOW - This song comes from the Uta no Prince-sama Debut PSP game. It continues the trend of Otoya's character songs having a rock sound to them. This one though starts off running with not as much needing to be built up before hitting the chorus for the first time. It is in the same vein as the other song so if you enjoyed that you are bound to probably enjoy this one. I do feel the chorus of this song has a bit more punch to it. And the instrumental break in it is easily able to carry the energy of the song until it goes back to the segments with vocals again.

3. BRAND NEW MELODY (off vocal)
4. OVER THE RAINBOW (off vocal)

Overall: The highlight of the packaging is basically just the cover artwork. It, like the songs in the single, do well to capture the character well which really is the point of a release like this.

Otoya is the energetic, positive boy next door kind of character and the songs do well to reflect that. Both are upbeat and keeping him in the rock genre helps with giving him songs with a good deal of energy.

The fact that they are both used for Utapri releases makes it a high on the list of must buy's for fans of the series, or at least those who want to be able to listen to the songs free of the media they are used in. Though for BRAND NEW MELODY this is the only way to hear the full song as only a short version of it was used in the anime.

Kisumai GAME 28 July 2015 episode review

A new game is tried in this episode as they mix something old with something new to create Hit Song Karuta.

The guest for the episode is Inoue Yuusuke from the comedy duo NONSTYLE, who gets to join Kis-My-Ft2 in trying to figure out songs from mainly their lyrics alone.

There are three difficulty levels for this, the first with having the lyrics recited in the method of old Chinese poems (shigin). So there is still some rhythm of the song to try to listen for, but barely. But basically this is a special version of the karuta game where in place of poetry song lyrics from hit Japanese pop songs are said and the guys have to figure out which song it is, from the cards placed in front of them, before the lyrics that use the title of the song comes up. Which is usually the chorus.

The next level is with a narrator, and they have a veteran who does documentaries and variety programs to read out the lyrics. With it going to spoken word it gets of course harder as they have to rely on knowing the lyrics on their own. Not to mention a quicker pace so they have less time to figure it out.

The final level has the lyrics read out by a robot, a Palmi by DMM. Adding to the difficulty level with that is that its English pronunciation sounds strange. As a native English speaker it all sounded clear enough for me, but I can tell that it would be hard at times for someone not nearly as familiar with the language to figure out what exactly it was saying.

Yokoo Wataru has the most entertaining moment with his reaction to his failure. There are some other amusing ones but his was definitely the most memorable. With having to fit five rounds for the three levels there was not much time for the members to do much more than play the game.

The next episode is a magic episode, which I am dreading. Though to be honest it is partly because it was announced that they decided to end Kisumai GAME to replace it with a new show, Kisumai Magic. I can only assume it will be based around the magic episodes as honestly they are some of the most boring episodes of this show. So I am disappointed with that news and doubt I will continue with doing episode reviews for that. I will finish up with Kisumai GAME though so I will have the full run covered.

Kisumai GAME 21 July 2015 episode review

Another mix game for the group, so another attempt for them to try their best to avoid drinking/eating something disgusting.

The guests for this episode are Iwamoto Teruo and Miura Atsuhiro, both retired pro-soccer players, who are competing against them in this challenge.

To try to make things a bit more even with the skill differences between the two teams while Kis-My-Ft2 have to get the ball into the box from the front the ex-players need to get it in from the top.

Unlike previous mix games there is no way to remove an item from a drink, just add to it. So it more or less is set up that there is going to be something gross for the guys to drink after each round. Thankfully there are only two rounds, but that is a very slim silver lining when looking at the selection of possible ingredients.

In the end the main draw of these games is the punishment game and the reactions of the guys. The second drink you can tell has no chance to tasting good with everything in it and of course has the best reactions.

The most interesting moment for this episode comes from Tamamori Yuta who gets overly excited when he manages to do well with one of these challenges. He goes to high five everyone but catches himself when he reaches the opposing team. That said Kitayama Hiromitsu getting grief for the fact that he enjoys playing soccer and should be good at this is a solid second.

The next episode introduces a new game which looks to be a twist on the Japanese game of karuta.

New song for NEWS

It has been announced that NEWS will be doing the opening theme song for the upcoming anime series Kindaichi Shounen no Jikenbo R that will begin airing October 3rd. The title of the song will be Yon Juushi and there is no word if it will be released as a single.

Johnny's net announcement (English)

If NEWS keeps the pattern they seem to be moving into there should be a new single around the end of the year or start of the new one. I can see this song perhaps being a double A-side with a newer song for that, or even being held off on a CD release until the next album comes out. I really hope it will be the former than the latter though with no more information even all that is just speculation.

And of course this is not the only new song from the group that it is unknown when it will be released on CD as the group also has the song Sirius, which is being used in a commercial for bras currently. If anything it at least gives hope that it will not be too long a wait for another CD release from the group.

Maji Love 1000% - STARISH CD review

Title: Maji Love 1000%
Artists: STARISH
Release date: 20 July, 2011
Version: N/A

Packaging: While the packaging itself is rather basic for a CD single, jewel case with booklet and back cover, it has some nice touches that make it stand out. The cover is a good example as instead of just having the characters in any random pose they are set up to be miming part of the title song with Jinguji Ren and Ichinose Tokiya making the heart to cover the "Love" while the other four make out the "1000%" with their hands. It is a nice creative touch that makes it memorable. The CD itself is picture labeled with images of the characters.

The lyric booklet stands out for not just having the lyrics for the two songs on the single but also has the breakdown of who sings which lines of the songs. As an idol fan in general I love this as it helps when you are not too familiar with voices in a group. And having images of the characters with their names is good too for helping those who may not have gotten down all the faces and names.

Honestly the packaging for this looks better than what you get with most idol singles that tend to be much more bare bones.

Tracks:

1. Maji Love 1000% - The title track and the opening theme song for the first season of the anime adaption of the Uta no Prince-sama game franchise. This is a fun and lively song that perfectly fits the tone of the anime series in its light-hearted fluff. As what will become a mainstay for the opening songs each character gets a spoken line at the start after a part of the chorus starts the song off with a bang. The verses give the characters the majority of their solo lines with the chorus being more shared lines between them all. It is a catchy song which helps it stand out among other anime songs out there, it feels like some extra care was given to it and it paid off.

2. Mirai Chizu - Scales things back a bit to balance out the title track with something more mellow. This was used as an insert song in one of the episodes and fits for the story line of that episode. That said it can stand on its own just fine. The soft verses mainly sung as a group or with shared lines move into a chorus that has a nice uplifting sound to it and focuses more on solo lines for everyone. I am a sucker for a song that has nice musical flourishes and this song does not disappoint at all there.

3. Maji Love 1000% (instrumental)
4. Mirai Chizu (instrumental)

I am not going to bother with reviewing the instrumental versions of the song included on the single.

Overall: A solid release for the franchise for fans but I am not sure if those who are not at least familiar with the series already will be won over. For fans though it is a must. One of the big pluses about being a fan of an anime idol group is that all the group members will get solo lines and those will be mostly evenly spread. As a fan of real idol groups I appreciate that quite a bit. For anime songs these are pretty solid with Maji Love 1000% being pretty strong in that it will not be easily lost among other songs of this genre.

If you are trying to figure out a place to start when it comes to picking up the Utapri CDs then this is not a bad pick. In fact if you are not quite at die-hard fan level this is a solid pick to help bring you in.

Kisumai GAME 14 July 2015 episode review

It's the return of the seiyuu game but with a twist. Instead of trying to guess anime voice actors the group has to guess the anime song vocalist.

The comedian duo Doburock are the guests for this episode, and they come prepared with instrument in hand.

They are given a paper with a list of songs to help them narrow things down a bit, with having to guess which out of five songs the singer sings. That said like with all of these the anime series covered tend to be some of the more well known ones to the general Japanese public.

Like with past episodes like this they have to start out asking for lines, this time of course all song related, to try to see if they can recognize the voice without having the song itself sung at first. Then it moves on for the singer to be requested to sing one of the five songs.

The most entertaining is an easy pick for me, and that is Miyata Toshiya. As a big One Piece fan myself I was on the same wave length as him for that artist and performance. In fact I am 100% certain I would have been moved to tears myself if I was in the same situation.

Though there are some other really fun moments so I would recommend this episode. In fact out all the more low key episodes this game is always a fun watch as the voice actors always seem to enjoy themselves and the anisong singers in this episode are really no different.

The next episode should be another fun episode as it is one of the mix drink games, this time the sport will be soccer.

Kokubun marries!

After rumors about it happening or supposing it would happen in the near future TOKIO's Kokubun Taichi has gotten married. The announcement came via cards sent out to members of the group's fanclub and there is expected to be a press announcement about it soon, the one originally scheduled for it has been postponed because of the weather in Eastern Japan.

All that is known about his new wife is that she worked at TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting System) but retired in the past year. The two had been dating for about seven years.

Yahoo! Japan news article (Japanese only)

I am so happy for Kokubun as he has been on the rumored to be married next list for Johnny's for some time. Of course there have been, and still are, plenty of rumors of why it took so long but honestly I think when it comes to older groups like TOKIO I doubt this kind of news would be considered too shocking for fans.

And I think it was a nice touch for him to decide to make the announcement to the fans first instead of having them learn of it from the news media. In fact from the looks of it this ended up being the exact opposite of that.

Of course now that Kokubun has finally tied the knot I am sure everyone is going to move on to figure out who will end up being the next Johnny's to marry.

Kisumai & TOKIO singles

A confirmation and an announcement for two to the Johnny's groups that I follow.

The Kis-My-Ft2 single had been previously announced but outside a release date there was no information about it. Probably the most stand out thing about this release is that it bucks the usual release trend of two LEs and opts for just one. I can only assume this is because it is set to release so close to their next single. The title of the single is AAO and set to release October 14th.

The limited edition comes with the usual DVD that will have the PV and the making of footage for the title track. It will also have a B-side included on the CD that is still untitled.

The regular edition is CD only and looks like it will have the title track then four other songs. If you get the first press version of it it will come with a slipcase like previous releases.

I have been expecting TOKIO to release a single at some point this year. They may not release much but usually get one music release out a year and it is too soon for another album. The single is titled Tokyo Drive and will be released October 28th. The title track is written by Nagase Tomoya and the single comes in two editions, limited and regular.

The LE comes with a DVD with the PV for the title track.  The CD includes the title track, a still untitled B-side, and the backing track version of the title song.

The regular edition has the same CD tracks as the LE plus a bonus B-side. The first press bonus for the single is listed as stickers.

Looks like there is plenty for me to look forward to as the year starts to reach the end. I am really happy that TOKIO is releasing something as the group seems to be more variety based these days and only do music related things once in a blue moon.

I just hope the rest of the release information for them all will come out in the near future.

Kisumai GAME 07 July 2015 episode review

We have a new game and it is probably the least non-Japanese fluent friendly of them all to watch.

I guess the magician game was not enough to keep the budget low for this show as this episode introduces a game that has even less going for it than those. It is simply a keyword search using Yahoo! Japan's search engine and having a limit of only being able to use a couple of words.

The guest for this episode is comedian Suidobashi Hakase. He does bring some life to the episode with his comedic sense but even then there is only so much one can do with topic like this.

Not sure how helpful seeing the words the Yahoo! Japan employee is given to use is. I doubt anyone watching is going to bother to only use a couple of words to find what they are looking for. And as the group proved you do not need those exact words to find what they were looking for.

No one managed to stand out in this episode as the game really did not give anyone a good chance to do something that would.

If you know some Japanese or are trying to learn then it may not be too bad of an episode. In fact the way they have it structured you could play along and use it as a word building exercise. But if you know little of the language then these are going to be skipable episodes unless you really enjoy watching the guys do just about anything.

NEWS - WORLD QUEST/Pokopokopekooriya (15th single)

This single is the start of what will be the current norm for NEWS single releases. It came in three edition, two limited editions and a regular edition. The type A version of the limited edition came with a DVD with the music video and making of footage while the type B had two B-side songs not available on the other two versions of the single. The regular edition like most previous singles from the group has an exclusive B-side track for it as well.

This single also begins the professional soccer tie-in songs for the group as the first lead track was used as the theme song for the FIFA World Cup Japan 2012. The other A-side was the theme song for a late night drama Kato Shigeaki had a part in, Hana no Zubora Meshi.

Kisumai GAME 30 June 2015 episode review

And we have the return of the magician game in this episode, which I expect they are continuing with because these have to be pretty cheap to make.

The magician for this episode is called Fujii Akira and looks the least like one would think someone in his profession would look like.

Guest is talento Takei Sou and thankfully he is a more dynamic guest to watch which helps make the episode a bit more entertaining to watch.

The format for the episode really has not changed at all from the last time. It is interesting to see the guys try to figure out the tricks, especially making sure to watch hands since they mostly all end up being slight of hand kind of tricks. Not to mention that they get shown how the tricks are done so they are getting the chance to learn what things to be looking for.

There is a little change up as for one of the rounds it uses cards instead of handkerchiefs then the other a coin, which is nice for some variety. I do have to wonder how much further they can go with this concept before it starts becoming incredibly stale though as it still is all about slight of hand tricks.

I can only assume they chose Senga Kento for the penalty game because they knew they would get a good reaction from him. This time around it definitely looks to be more of a put on fright than him being actually terrified. And he easily gets the most entertaining member selection for it as that is basically the only real standout moment in the episode.

The change up of items helps a little for this episode but still suffers the main issue with this game in that it is not all that exciting to watch. I really do think this game was created to give them something low budget to do to offset the cost of the more entertaining episodes of the show. That said it looks like the next episode will give us another game with the same goal as the members will be looking up things online with a search engine.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal Character Song Collection CD review

Title: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal Character Song Collection
Artists: Various
Release date: April 29, 2015
Version: iTunes

Since I have the iTunes version of the album all I have to review with this are the songs themselves.

Tracks:

1. Futtemo Haretemo -come rain or come shine- Naturally the album starts off with the character song for Sailor Moon/Tsukino Usagi. It is a song that I can see falling nicely in with all the previous character songs for the character, especially as she is the only one to retain her original voice actor from the original anime. But there are parts that seem to take their cues from those 90s songs, especially the few lines before the the chorus and then the chorus itself. So if you liked Usagi's character songs from the original anime series then you will most likely enjoy this song as well.

2. A Touch of Rain - Following is of course Sailor Mercury/Mizuno Ami's character song. I love this song, which surprised me as I have never cared too much for Ami's previous character songs. I think having a different voice actress who seems to have a stronger singing voice (or better sound equipment to use to make up for one) might be part of the reason. That said I love how it starts soft and builds to the chorus. Even though it is a more mellow song it does not bore with enough happening with the music, like the addition of instruments at parts as the verses build to the chorus, and a good break so it does not become monotonous.

3. Hi no Umi - Sailor Mars/Hino Rei gets a rock flavored song. It is probably the greatest change in style from past character songs. But mostly as her songs tended to stick with pop. But like most of Rei's songs this one is a standout on the album, and partly because it goes pop-rock instead of the more general pop of the rest. It has some nice energy to it and I quite enjoy that it has a guitar solo and that it gets followed up with a short a capella segment for a good contrast. Also love the part near the end when things get changed up with the vocals to give it a driving sound.

4. cherry pie - I have never really cared too much for most of the songs that Sailor Jupiter/Kino Makoto has been given for her character songs but I love this one. It has a nice beat that runs through it and just sounds so upbeat and poppy. It does have a sound that is a bit reminiscent of the kinds of songs the series had for character songs but not quite. The chorus is the shining point of the song but later in the song there are some change up to the verses that are nice to give some contrast to the rest of the song without being distracting.

5. ♥ ga Tonjyau Sora Dakara - Sailor Venus/Aino Minako is my favorite character so I always hope that she gets good character songs. After being spoiled with the live action adaption with having plenty of songs for the character it is back to only having the same amount as the rest and thankfully this is a good song. Not my favorite Sailor Venus song but still one that is something I can see myself putting on a playlist just because I do want to listen to it. That aside it has a stronger beat than Makoto's that gives it a sense of urgency in the verses until it hits the chorus where things seem to relax a lighter in tone.

6. Kimi no Hitomi no Moonrise - This is the character song for Tuxedo Mask/Chiba Mamoru. I have never cared for his character songs in general and this has not changed that at all. It has a jazzy sound mixed in with the standard pop, which does seem fitting for the character at least. There is just something about the chorus I really do not like. Almost like it is trying to build something there but it just falls flat. It is a pity as the verses sound fine to me for the most part but I just do not feel satisfied with how the song moves through the chorus.

7. I'm Going Down - The Four Kings (Malachite, Zoicite, Nephrite and Jadeite) get a song of their own, which actually seems aptly titled considering their fate in the series. It has an electronic sound to it, which includes the voices so if you ever thought the Sailor Moon series lacked autotune in its music then this song helps fill that void. It thankfully is not used abundantly and does work mostly for when it is used though at the end it does start to seem a little overused. The song has a bit of an urgent feel to it with its beat but it comes off rather lackluster. It is not a bad song but when compared to the rest on the album it does not stand up so well.

8. Mayonaka no secret talk - The first duet song on the album and it features Ami and Makoto. It has a nice sweet sound to it that harkens back to older Sailor Moon songs, especially in the chorus. The vocals are a really nice fit for it and helps give it a relaxing feeling and go along well together. The 'oyasumi' at the end is a nice touch, as this just seems like a good song to go to sleep to.

9. Star on Stars - The second and final duet song on the album, this one featuring Rei and Minako. It has a big band style to it, which also includes a random guy saying a few words here and there throughout the song. The guy annoys me as I can understand maybe having him at the start or end but in the middle the song just takes me out of it completely and bugs me as I then have to get myself back into the song. Which is a pity as otherwise I enjoy it for the fun that it is, even though it does sound pretty generic.

10. Kakumei wa Night & Day - This is the group song for all the Sailor Guardians and considering there is a good mix of vocal strength it does not come out too bad. The verses tend to be mostly solo lines with the chorus being, well chorus singing of the five. It has a driving beat giving it a sense of urgency and while not as strong as Ai no Senshi it sounds like it is something aiming to be in that vein at least. It just lacks the epic sound of that song.

Overall: A solid addition to the Sailor Moon discography for character songs. Even though it is a bit of a mixed bag so are basically all the previous character songs as well. And honestly the main appeal for these are that you are getting music based off characters and performed by their voice actors as they are portraying them. So unless you are a fan of either the series or the voice actors then there is little reason to pick the album up.

That said it is not a bad grouping of anime songs so if you enjoy anisongs then you should at least give this a listen.

On reviews

I was already planning on doing reviews for this year's releases when I figured why wait until the end of the year to review these things. So I hope to add reviews as a regular feature of this blog so it is not so video heavy as it has been of late. I will be adding a new page for the blog that will have a list of releases that I plan on reviewing, which for the most part are going to be the new releases that I get during the year.

Until I get that up here is the list so far, with more of course to be added.

Releases to review:

Chu-Z - Hana no Arch/Brand Boy RE A/B/ C single (11FEB2015)
